Commercial Real Estate: Turn your vacant space into a charitable write-off
If you are finding it impossible to get your commercial space rented, you may want to consider donating the space to a local nonprofit organization and turn the space into a tax write-off. Granted, it’s not cash coming in, but it’s still better than just wasting the space. In addition to a write-off, if properly researched, the nonprofit organization may be able to help ensure you don’t loose any of your remaining tenants and even help to fill your remaining vacant spaces.
When looking for a nonprofit to donate your space to, take into account what businesses already have set up shop in your building/site. For example: If your property is filled primarily with retail shops, then consider donating some of the vacant space to a profit that provides onsite afterschool activities for children. That way when parent arrive to pick up their children, they may be inclined to stick around for a little while and shop. The increase in shops’ revenues will help to prevent the loss of any additional tenants, and may entice other retail owner’s to take up shop in your building/site.
