Transform your kitchen without having to break the bank. Here are a few tips that will not only bring that kitchen of yours into the modern age, but also save you from having to decide between remodeling the kitchen or taking that vacation this year.

1. Fire the cabinet maker. By ordering ready to assemble cabinets, you can easily cut $10,000 plus off your remodeling expense. I would only recommend this to people who have some experience in do-it-yourself work, and feel they could pull it off. Even still, when ordering anything online or by mail, you need to ensure your measurements are exact.

2. Work around the appliances. With the exception of the refrigerator and trash compactor, you’ll want to avoid moving your major appliances. Although you may love to move the sink or the stove onto an island (or anywhere else), having the plumbing, gas, and power for these items moved can leave you sifting through the lint in your pockets trying to pay for the rest of the remodel.

3. Open up the kitchen without expanding your home. If you have an older home, your kitchen may feel small and cramped. Rather then expanding your home’s square footage, bringing in more natural light and opening the kitchen up to the rest of your home will completely transform the look of your kitchen. Install a skylight and replace the partition walls with a single support beam.

4. Consider varying material. Although granite slab may be the look you are after, it may start to get a little pricy to cover all your counter space with the good stuff. You may want to consider using both granite and contrasting types of wood to not only add a Feng Shui aspect to the room, but also to minimize material cost. Also, rather than going with the 1 ¼, by buying only ¾ inch granite and using a laminated edge to make it appear you have the heavy stuff, you can cut the cost of your counter in half. Of course you will need to be sure to use a plywood backing to add structural support to the thinner slab, but nobody needs to know it.
